  My name is Barbara Penson and I am a candidate for the position of Clerk of Superior Court of Floyd County, GA. I was born, raised and educated in Floyd County and attended Armuchee schools while living in Texas Valley. My family moved off their farm in Texas Valley to their farm in Bartow County and I attended my junior and senior year there, graduating from Cass High in Bartow County.

  I began my work career with Southern Bell Telephone Company, the Credit Bureau of Rome, and the Georgia Department of Labor. I was employed on September 17, 1979 by the Floyd County Schools Superintendent’s office as an administrative secretary and worked in Staff Development (teacher certification crediting), Federal Programs (Title II, Title III, Title VI) and Board Policy Services. I was promoted to Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent in 1997. Presently I am in charge of student transcripts (records) and teacher extended day payroll. I have also worked at Sears (as a second job) as a commissioned sales associate in the appliance department from 1980 until January 15, 2008 when I retired.

  I was married to the late Rev. Donald Wayne Penson for 40 years. He served as pastor for Rehoboth Baptist Church in Cave Spring, Snow Springs Baptist Church in Adairsville, Live Oak Baptist Church in Cave Spring, Community Chapel Baptist Church in Rome, Connesena Baptist Church in Adairsville, and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Kingston. My husband also served as chaplain of the Floyd County Police Department for 12 years. My husband was a life long member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #766 of Rome and that local later merged into Local #72 of Atlanta. Together we have three children, and six grandchildren. My first born is Cheryl Penson Garrett, who owned and operated Kutters Way Hair Salon of Lindale, is married to Eugene Garrett, supervisor with the Georgia Department of Transportation. My son, Jeff Penson, is a member of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #72, of Atlanta and is married to Kim Penson, a floral designer employed with Flowers and Gifts by Joan. My youngest daughter, April Penson Worthington, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Shorter College and is currently the Director of Family Services for the Exchange Club Family Resource Center. She is married to Dennis Worthington, member of International Laborers Union of North America #515 of Atlanta. Grandchildren are: Jeffrey, Erica, Dakota, Jeania, T.J., & Drew.

  I am an active member of the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church for the past 20 years (since 1984). Other organizations I have been involved with include:

Melissa Pyle, Treasurer for the Campaign to Elect Barbara H. Penson, is a native Roman. Ms. Pyle is the daughter of Imogene Pace Pyle and the late Roy W. Pyle. Through her father's work as a charter member of the Rome Building and Construction Trades Council and an International Representative for the AFL-CIO, Ms. Pyle has much experience in the political arena and has worked on numerous political campaigns, both locally and statewide, for a variety of candidates.

Ms. Pyle attended The Thornwood School for Girls and is a 1978 Cum Laude graduate of Darlington School. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Economics from Berry College as well as a Master of Business Administration degree in Management with a sub-specialty in Human Resource Management from Berry College.

Ms. Pyle implemented and has directed the Floyd County Schools Youth Apprenticeship Program since its inception in 1995. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Partnership For Excellence in Education. She also serves on the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, previouly served as a member of the Steering Committee and Needs Assessment Subcommittee for the Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy, and also serves on numerous Program Advisory Committees throughout Floyd County Schools. She is a former White House Fellowship nominee and has been actively involved in her community through the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce Women In Management Committee, the Arthritis Foundation, the American Heart Association, the American Heart Walk, and the Coosa Valley Area Tech Prep/School-to-Work Consortium. She is a 1999 graduate of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce Leadership Rome program and holds membership in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, Strathmore's Who's Who, and International Who's Who Of Professional Management. Ms. Pyle is also a mentor for the Communities-In-Schools program and currently mentors an 8th grade student at Pepperell Middle School.
